2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Edun

Bono and wife Ali Hewson founded Edun in 2005 with the intention using fashion as a way to promote trade and industry in Africa. Today, new creative director Sharon Wauchob debuted her second collection that was as much about the clothes as it was about Edun's underlying motive. The collection, entitled "Storytellers and Liars," played with notions of reality and fantasy. If the fantasy existed in the abstract prints and unfinished knits, the reality came through in wearable silhouettes: slim twill trousers, quilted bomber jackets, easy calf-length skirts. The stories were many: military, bohemian, urban edge - but they meshed together in a really effortless way thanks to Wauchob's spot-on tailoring and knack for balanced proportions. Choosing clothes with a conscience often requires some fashionable compromises, but here, it just feels like a bonus.

  • Trends: Textured knits, silk trousers, deconstruction, bomber jackets, longer hemlines
  • Colours: Earthy colors like olive, brown, grey, and cream.
  • Key Looks: A knit pencil skirt paired with a cropped bomber; a black knit maxi skirt with black blouse.
  • Accessories: Open-toe platform booties and brass charm jewellery made in Kenya.
  • Who Would Wear It: Urbane chicsters.
