2012 MBFWA: Magdalena Velevska

As the sun set on Sydney's CBD, the pink dusk sky reflected in the sky scrapers before the fash-pack crowd. Pretty? Yes, but the vista from the Maritime Museum paled in comparison to the visual treat that Magdalena Velevska provided. Ms Velevska set the bar high last year, but her Spring/Summer '12-'13 collection delivered in spades; delighting the discerning guest list with her artfully modern point de muse embroidery, subtly folkish fringing and precision sequin-work. Sharp, clean, minimal silhouettes countered the intricate detailing - lending a modern feel to the aquatic-inspired collection. The underwater influences were there, if only subtly - visible upon closer inspection via the dappled prints, liquid-effect knitwear, bubble-like circular motifs and the stingray leather pointy-toed pumps. The Life Aquatic never looked so cool. . .

  • Colours: Neon yellow, charcoal, white, pale sage/mint green, nude and musky pink.
  • Trends: Tailoring, graphic prints, neons, shell tops, pencil skirts, minimalism, and cropped trousers.
  • Key Looks: The sequin panelled dresses, circular motif skirts and tops, asymmetrical hemlines and a particularly cool neon and nude spliced skirt.
  • Accessories: Stingray skin pointy toed pumps in white with nude ankle straps and black stiletto heels as well as sculptural face masks.
  • Front Row: International bloggers Elin Kling, Tommy Ton, Phil Oh and Candice Lake, as well as Jodi Gordon and Nikki Phillips.
